A discussion session on how translators express themselves through their work took place in Moscow Gostiny Dvor
The event was moderated by author and anthropologist Igor Sid.
“Translators shouldn’t aspire to be original, they should know the literary traditions, follow them, and do their job conscientiously,” said Alejandro Ariel González, President of the Dostoevsky Society of Argentina.
According to Bulgarian poet and translator Nadia Popova, literary translation is like “blood transfusion between literatures, languages, and nations.”
Lilit Meliksetyan, literary scholar, Professor at the Russian-Armenian University, spoke about Armenia’s Feast of the Holy Translators and its origins. Franziska Zwerg, a translator from Germany, talked about the relationship between translators and the texts they are working on. Greek writer Konstantinos Michopoulos explained why he believes “a translator should not be neutral towards the text.” Abdoul Boly Kane, an expert in Russian philology from Senegal, told the audience what it’s like to translate from unwritten languages.
