The art of translation is an eternal clash between liberty and dogma, flexibility and objectivity, fearless creativity and diffidence, faithfulness to the source material and the need to veer away from it.
Quite a number of book translations are better than the original. However, there are cases where literary works fail to gain recognition from readers through the fault of their translators (“Bad translation is a slander on the author”).
Well-known writers, translators, and literary scholars will talk about the cultural role of translators and their influence on the perception and interpretation of literary texts.
